that's me again:)

I think all of you have got feedback from Nurdan Hoca about your assessed teaching. I talked to her today. First of all, I want to thank to her for her constructive and motivating feedback.

In fact I am content about my assessed teaching performance. of course there were mistakes but as we do not have enough experience yet, it is very normal Ithink.

The thing that I should have paid more attention in my assessed teaching was the worksheet that I have prepared. there were a few spelling mistakes and those mistakes confused students. It is really very important as students believe whatever they see. we should be very very careful about worksheets that we will hand out. this is just a suggestion.

Do you have any suggestion based on your own experiences in Metu College or somewhere else??

hi friends,

each and every day we are coming to the end we are closer to the end of being a student. personally I feel tired of being a student. I JUST WANT TO TEACH:) but when I thinhk of going away from ODTü, it really makes me sad.

In terms of teaching, this was the most beneficial term for me in this school. Having done my practice teaching in such a school, I'm really looking forward to be a real teacher:)

what do you think about the end of the school? Do you think we can see each other after graduation? I will miss all of you:(

1. Sense of Humor
A sense of humor can help you become a successful teacher. Your sense of humor can relieve tense classroom situations before they become disruptions. A sense of humor will also make class more enjoyable for your students and possibly make students look forward to attending and paying attention. Most importantly, a sense of humor will allow you to see the joy in life and make you a happier person as you progress through this sometimes stressful career.

2. A Positive Attitutude
A positive attitude is a great asset in life. You will be thrown many curve balls in life and especially in the teaching profession. A positive attitude will help you cope with these in the best way. For example, you may find out the first day of school that you are teaching Algebra 2 instead of Algebra 1. This would not be an ideal situation, but a teacher with the right attitude would try to focus on getting through the first day without negatively impacting the students.

3. High Expectations
An effective teacher must have high expectations. You should strive to raise the bar for your students. If you expect less effort you will receive less effort. You should work on an attitude that says that you know students can achieve to your level of expectations, thereby giving them a sense of confidence too. This is not to say that you should create unrealistic expectations. However, your expectations will be one of the key factors in helping students learn and achieve.

4. Consistency
In order to create a positive learning environment your students should know what to expect from you each day. You need to be consistent. This will create a safe learning environment for the students and they will be more likely to succeed. It is amazing that students can adapt to teachers throughout the day that range from strict to easy. However, they will dislike an environment in which the rules are constantly changing.

5. Fairness
Many people confuse fairness and consistency. A consistent teacher is the same person from day to day. A fair teacher treats students equally in the same situation. For example, students complain of unfairness when teachers treat one gender or group of students differently. It would be terribly unfair to go easier on the football players in a class than on the cheerleaders. Students pick up on this so quickly, so be careful of being labelled unfair.

6. Flexibility
One of the tenets of teaching should be that everything is in a constant state of change. Interruptions and disruptions are the norm and very few days are 'typical'. Therefore, a flexible attitude is important not only for your stress level but also for your students who expect you to be in charge and take control of any situation.

Do you agree with those statements? OR can you add some more characteristics of a succesful teacher? For example the thing that comes to my mind is "creativity". What else can there be????

Example: He think modern art is bosh.

It is interesting to see other Turkish words in English as "yoghurt", isn't it??? :)

FIRST MEETING

As the time passes, it seems to me to that it is time to realize my dream. I have dreamed to be an English teacher since I was 11. Because of this reason this semester will be really important for me as it is the last time to make practice before meeting the real teaching world. My first experience in Metu College made me more excited about being a teacher. The school and the environment seemed really motivating to me. I must confess that I was a bit nervous about the teachers’ attitudes in that school according to what I have heard from my friends beforehand. Yet, now I really feel myself lucky to make my practice teaching in such a school. The attitudes of the head of the English Teaching Department were in a friendly way. She really behaved us in a good manner. Also, the head of the officer mentioned a bit the teaching style of the school and I understood that the education that we have get in this university will not be in vain. I got attracted because in the schools that I have made observation until now there was not such an application in English teaching.
